Evening program

Concerts, readings, panel discussions, performances and film screenings – over a period of six weeks the Pop Up Boat offers an opportunity to experience contemporary Jewish culture by way of new sounds and exciting stories in words and pictures – cheeky and serious, conscious of tradition and provocative, unsentimental and confrontational. Enjoy our program in the evening light on the River Main and against the Frankfurt skyline by night, along with drinks and the best hummus in town.

In case of bad weather, all events will take place below deck.

• Efrat Alony Trio

  Efrat Alony

  Efrat Alony’s music is as multifaceted as her biography. The daughter of Iraqi immigrants, she was born in Israel, where she began to study music composition and singing. She later moved to Boston and then Berlin, where she and the other members of her band, clarinetist Oliver Leicht and guitarist Frank Wingold, explore experimental crossovers between jazz, soul and electro.

• Bridges – connecting with music

  Employing darbuka, flamenco guitar, electric bass and voice, the newly formed Ensemble Tremolo perform Syrian and other traditional songs from the Middle East, infusing them with flamenco and jazz elements. Their repertoire also includes their own compositions for the dance-floor.

• On the Road – an evening of short films

  Women in Sink Aya Ten Meter Tower

  As part of the Frankfurt Jewish Film Festival, the Pop Up Boat will be transformed into an open-air cinema for one evening. Four short films will be screened whose protagonists are in one way or another “on the road”: “Why?” “Women in Sink,” “Ten Meter Tower,” and the European premiere of “AYA.”

• Sisters – אָחוֹת

  Schwestern - אָחוֹת

  Yearning and sibling love: In a performative dialog, Moran Sanderovic and Veronika Boekelman examine the sometimes absurd everyday lives of their two sisters and their belief systems. One sister is an ultra-Orthodox Jew who has moved to the West Bank in the Occupied Territories while the other lives as a strict devotee of the Hare Krishna movement in the city of Krishna’s birth in India.

• Screen and Dine: Jerusalem on your plate

  Screen and Dine

  You are what you eat. For this reason, cultural diversity is most clearly revealed on the plate. From gefilte fish and Hefezopf to hot dogs and hummus: Jewish cooking combines a diverse range of culinary traditions. At our Screen and Dine event, a screening of the documentary “Jerusalem on a Plate” by the chef Yotam Ottolenghi will be followed by an onboard, Jerusalem-style dinner.

• “I Can See Music!” presents: The ‘Socalled’ Movie

  The ‘Socalled’ Movie

  Josh ‘Socalled‘ Dolgin is a pianist, accordionist, journalist, photographer, filmmaker, magician, cartoonist and puppet-maker. His music combines elements of klezmer, hip hop and funk and thereby crosses the boundaries between different cultures, epochs and generations. This Canadian film from 2010 presents a portrait of an individual and fearless artist.

  The screening is part of the music film series “I Can See Music!” presented by Petra Klaus and Matthias Westerweller.

• Dana Barak and Jonathan Weiss

  Dana Barak Dana Barak

  Clarinetist Dana Barak and flutist Jonathan Weiss are members of the Young Academy of the Ensemble Modern. They will present an evening of new music including new arrangements of Israeli folksongs and atonal compositions by Nikola Resanovic, Jonathan Keren and Yoachim Stutschewsky.

• Sukkot dinner and Pop Up Boat closing party

  La Bolshevita

  Dinner under the stars. On the eve of the seven-day Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, which commemorates the wandering of the Israelite people in the desert, we would like to celebrate with you the last evening of our Pop Up Boat season under what we hope will be a clear sky. In keeping with our theme, you will feel on board like in an oasis of sound, produced by DJ Janeck Altshuler aka La Bolshevita.
